Religious Leader's Role in Alternative Narratives

Violent extremism is one phenomenon that has painted religion in a very bad light. The motives of religion have been questioned including the actions of the believers. The tranquility and reason that is associated with religion was washed overnight due to the consequences that were seen from violent extremism. This vice was seen to be motivated by religion and thus difficult to question. Those who questioned were quickly silenced with ‘God is never questioned’. The critical thinkers felt that religion was being misused but lacked the means to prove. Religious leaders who were highly depended upon were lost for words because their counter messages did not seem to be having any effect. Actually counter messages proved very counterproductive due to their combative nature.

CICC Trust decided to work with alternative narratives; creating a different ideology and working to sell it. An ideology that is derived from scriptures and that focuses on the positives only. CICC Trust embarked on a step to step guide of assisting religious leaders understand how to create alternative narratives. First they had to understand the problem, know their audience, the channel to communicate and how they will package their messages. Through the use of intrareligious dialogues, religious leaders created different messages and had them backed with scriptures, then they chose social media as the ideal channel since many young people are found in the metaverse.

A total of 24 religious leaders were used to video record the messages which were later uploaded on CICC Facebook pages. The religious leaders appreciated the exercise and were actually amazed by how one can create very different and good messages that will be receptive as opposed to countering a message. the messages created as sermons with each having at least 1000 views.
